Strengthening Atmospheric Monitoring for Extreme Weather in the Eastern Mediterranean

Growing climate variability and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events have intensified the need for advanced atmospheric monitoring across the Eastern Mediterranean. To address these challenges, Cyprus strengthened scientific collaboration aimed at improving the observation, analysis, and forecasting of critical atmospheric phenomena affecting the region. The initiative combines satellite Earth Observation data, numerical weather prediction models, atmospheric measurements, and artificial intelligence to monitor events such as dust storms, heatwaves, severe storms, wildfires, and air pollution episodes. By integrating information from multiple observation platforms, scientists can provide more accurate forecasts and deliver timely information to public authorities responsible for civil protection, environmental management, and public health. The collaboration also supports the development of climate services designed to improve resilience against climate-related hazards. Advanced monitoring systems enable better assessment of long-term environmental trends, enhance early warning capabilities, and contribute to more effective disaster preparedness. As climate change continues to influence weather patterns across the Mediterranean, the integration of Earth Observation technologies is becoming increasingly important for protecting communities, infrastructure, agriculture, and natural ecosystems.
